What Type of Addiction Rehab Facility is Best for Me?

Addiction Rehab Facility Wavelengths

In considering the type of addiction rehab facility and program to choose, it’s important to ask yourself some questions – about your alcohol or drug use and also, your expectations for yourself. This will likely be one of the most positive life-changing experiences you will go through.  There are facilities that specialize in specific drugs, alcohol or mental health while others may take a more well-rounded, general approach.

Let’s start with the basics. It is a great thing you had enough and are asking for help!  Be honest about your use – how much and for how long?  Honesty is the first step towards recovery.  Have you had any past clean time?  What do you expect to get out of rehab?  How much time can you take off from work?  Do you have insurance?  Will your insurance cover or can you afford a luxury treatment center?  These are questions to ask yourself to help make a decision and you will also be prepared to answer these same types of questions asked by the Rehab Treatment Facility.

Residential Treatment

Next, most facilities strongly recommend some type of residential treatment  (Inpatient or PHP Drug Rehab Center)  and a 90-day integrated or comprehensive program, which allows for a greater success rate and length of sobriety success.  For medical clearance to be in a residential program and safely coming down from alcohol or drugs, residential treatment usually requires a few days in alcohol detox or drug detox which is monitored 24×7 by medical and clinical staff. There may also be medically-assisted treatment during your time in alcohol or drug detox. It is very important to go through medically and clinically managed detox to avoid life-threatening seizures or emergencies. Partial Hospitalization or PHP will require you be either part of intense care during the day and sober living at night or be at the residences overnight and have the freedom to leave property during daytime, non-programming hours.  Inpatient is usually on-site and monitored closely by treatment staff.  One of the most important success factors in residential treatment is staff, an empathetic and caring staff to make one feel comfortable to progress in addiction recovery.

Also as part of residential treatment is the psychological or behavioral treatment to drugs. This can be in the form of individual counseling, group therapy (peer empathy/support), additional psychiatric care if needed or any combination thereof. Inpatient or PHP treatment should support any medical issues also, giving the recovering addict to get better physically.  A treatment center should create a daily structure with tools to handle addiction so positive habits continue after treatment. This residential treatment period really allows a recovering addict’s brain to clear and begin functioning normally.

Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient Treatment

Upon completing residential treatment, the path to recovery usually entails IOP (Intensive Outpatient) and OP (Outpatient Treatment).  Rather than mixing different facilities for residential and IOP, sober results tend to be better when fluidly transitioning from residential to IOP within the same rehab treatment center.  IOP is usually between 4-5 days a week with 3 hours of group therapy daily. This is an opportunity for the recovering addict to apply himself in group sharing and peer-support bonds. Another area of core program should be relapse prevention and lifestyle change. This should encompass replacing old addict behaviors or feelings like selfishness and resentments with positive emotions and activities the recovering addict enjoys.

Integration Into Society

OP is generally a resource for long-term, annual care usually provided once a week with strong peer connections and support. This is where a recovering addict begins the integration into society. The focus should be multiple resources from a treatment center such as sober living housing, job hunting support, ways to have fun sober, family integration and guidance for AA/NA program meetings. Relapse prevention should begin to be a daily instinct with how to handle stressors, interpersonal relationships, and changing conditions in life. OP treatment should have an alumni program so there is long-term peer support in a local community or across the country.

Specialized Programs

Holistic programs approach treatment from a whole-body or more spiritual perspective, incorporating various natural and open-minded therapies to promote sobriety, overall health, and contentment. The specifics can include acupuncture, natural herbs, far-east philosophy, yoga and core meditations.

Gender-specific rehab programs offer care for women or men only, allowing individuals to focus on their recovery without distractions from the opposite sex, and to address certain issues that are particular to their gender.

So, there are many options, but it comes down to your individual needs, expectations, time-off from a job, and insurance or cash payment ability. The best chance of long-term recovery indicates that one should go through a 90-Day treatment program, no matter what your chemical dependency.  A recovering addict needs an honest, caring, professional (certified) program with mind, body, and spiritual support from a drug rehab treatment center.
